Attracting Birds to Your Backyard to Make Your Own Bird Sanctuary
Creating your own backyard bird sanctuary is not as hard as it may seem. The main ingredient in attracting many of the most beautiful birds is food. That brings us to bird feeders. Putting up the correct feeder with the right food is the number one step to bringing nature closer to your home.
While there’re literally thousands of bird feeders out there, there’re basically only four types of feeders.
The first type is the ground feeder. The ground feeder has mesh on the bottom to hold the food, is flat & open, & is situated 203 feet off the ground to allow many different types of birds to rest comfortably while dining on their favorite snacks. Be sure to keep ground feeders a safe distance from nearby trees & shrubs so the birds have a chance of escape from predators hiding in the cover.
Tube bird feeders are shaped like?.well?.a tube! They are usually hung near windows for maximum enjoyment, just make certain they’re more then 3-5 away from the windows to avoid accidental avian suicide attempts. Thistle bird feeders are a type of tube feeder that has very small holes to only allow smaller birds access to the food. These feeders should be hung 5-6 feet off the ground. The larger birds will avoid these feeders because they’re unstable & do not have large, secure platforms for them to roost.
Some of the most popular feeders are the suet & hopper feeders. Hopper feeders are usually shaped like houses or many other designs to fit into the d?cor of your backyard. They contain large quantities of food, so they do not have to be filled as often?just do not let your food rot if you do not have enough birds to eat it regularly! Hopper feeders can usually be hung or mounted on a pole. Suet feeders are usually very simple wire feeders that are hung.
The last type of feeder attracts some of the most incredible birds. It’s the hummingbird feeders. A mixture of sugar & water is used to fill these feeders & they’re hung within eye shot so you can see their incredible feats. You should not use red food coloring or honey in this mixture, as that can make the birds ill?you do not want hummingbirds falling from the sky?.those beaks are long & sharp!
Building or purchasing the correct bird feeders for the types of birds you want to attract will help make your backyard an avian friendly zone. Setting out many different types of feeders will bring different types of birds for your viewing enjoyment!
