Creating Your Own Island of Grass - Nurturing a Lawn of Bermuda Grass

Bermuda grass is ideal for warm climates. It is very attractive & easy to take care of, & will be great for your landscape. It is great for walking around barefoot. Bermuda grass was imported to the US from Africa, & thrives from attitudes of forty-five degrees north to forty-five degrees south.

It’s rather easy to take care of Bermuda grass. Simply fertilizing, watering, & moving is all that needs to be done.

Fertilizing

It is very important that you fertilize Bermuda grass, but it is nice that it only needs done once or twice or two times per year. You should have a professional lawn care company do this. Using a solution of nitrogen, phosphorus, & potassium will make your lawn more lush & healthy.

Watering

Bermuda grass also needs water, but it is simple to do. It needs about an inch of water to deeply soak it every four to seven days to keep it healthy.

Mowing

Mowing can take a long time, but it is not complicated. An average sized lawn requires about 40 hours of mowing per year, so you really need to make certain you mow correctly in all that time. The following tips will help.

Always use a sharp blade. In the spring, make certain it is a new, freshly sharpened blade. In the middle of the summer, replace that blade with a new one.

Do not cut the Bermuda grass too short. Do not scalp the lawn. It is better to mow more often & cut it less short than to mow less often & attempt to take too much off.

You should leave the grass clippings on the lawn. They will naturally feed the growing grass & help keep it healthy. It will also reduce the amount of water your lawn needs. Finally, do not mow the lawn when it is wet, as the clippings will end up in clumps which will not help your lawn.
