When starting out with gardening, you should start small. Start with a small plant bed of about 25 or 30 square feet which is perfect for about 30 plants. You can attempt out your green thumb & expand & increase your plantings should you enjoy it.

Choosing a suitable site is the next thing to do. The gardening site must get at least six hours of sunlight. You should keep away from large trees that will away nutrients & water from your plants. Also, keep at least three feet from any fence or building. You may also want to select a place that is shaded from the intense afternoon sun in hot climates. Right. With suitable plants that are adaptable, you can have a healthy garden with ten to twelve hours of sunlight. Even though you can always improve on the soil quality, finding a site with good soil is definitely a plus. There is more. The site you select should not actually be watery, has steep slopes or rocky soil.

Next, start digging. Do you follow? This is the fun part. As gardening is not a clean hobby, be prepared to get some dirt under your nails. There is more. The first thing you really need to do is to get rid of any rocks, debris, grass, & weeds. There is more. Then dig the spot about one foot deep. After digging, level the soil and, if needed, add compost or minerals. If your soil is too acidic, add lime; if it is too sandy, add peat moss. Plants will thrive in neutral to acidic soil with a little added fertilizer.

If you buy seeds, then plant them according to the directions. If picking plants, select ones with green, healthy looking leaves & stems & healthy roots. You should put the larger plants towards the back of the bed while the smaller ones towards the front. Planting at the right time is the key to a successful start in gardening. Make sure & wait until the frosts are over before planting. If you are planting seeds the package will usually tell you exactly when you can plant them to achieve maximum growth.

When you have started gardening, make certain you provide enough water to your plants every day to ensure their growth. Hand watering works well if you only have a few plants. Otherwise, consider using other options like sprinklers & sprinkler hoses. Watering is more effective during the cooler parts of the day. The amount of water needed depends on the type of plants you have. Generally, an inch per week is sufficient. You will need to water your plants about three times a week during the hot periods.

You should add some mulch or compost to your garden. A few inches of mulch will help to hold moisture in the soil & improve fertility. You can use grass clippings, wood chips, leaves, pine needles, & manure as mulch.
