Squirrel Proofing Your Bird Feeder
Having a bird feeder is a great addition to almost any backyard, especially because of the beautiful birds that it can attract. The only downside to having a bird feeder is that other animals like birdseed too, like squirrels & other small animals. Even though all animals need to eat, having wild squirrels in your backyard is not a very good idea. There are many different bird feeders that attempt to stop squirrels from stealing the food, & there’re also many different ways to turn an old feeder into a squirrel proof one.
Putting birdseed out will most likely attract some squirrels, but many bird feeders can keep them away from the birdseed permanently. Some models of bird feeders are sold with netting over the openings, since smaller birds can still reach their beaks in. The netting will keep the squirrels out of the seed, & they will no longer return once they realize they will not actually be getting a meal from your backyard. Other models are mounted high from the ground, which makes it almost impossible for a squirrel to reach the seed. Models that hang with only a small area for a bird to rest also work great, since squirrels would not actually be easily able to balance on such a small area. Newer bird feeders can sense when a squirrel or other small animal is on the feeder because of the significant weight change, which then triggers small doors to be closed to block the seed. They work great, but do require batteries that can get somewhat expensive.
If you have a favorite bird feeder that you would love to keep, you do not have to worry about purchasing a new bird feeder. Instead you can use the techniques from squirrel proof bird feeders to make yours squirrel proof, & it only takes a few materials. Because squirrels are not able to jump onto high places that do not have an area to hold into, you can place your feeder in a high area. You can attempt hanging it from a deck or awning, just as long as a squirrel can not reach the seed from the deck. You can also buy decorative poles or pillars if it matches your backyard d?cor, or even create a shelf or designated area for your feeder to stay.
You can also select to add a piece of netting over your feeder to keep the squirrels from the seed, but just make certain that your feeder is securely mounted if placed on a table or flat surface. Some squirrels figure out a way to spill the bird feeder to get their prize, so attempt to avoid this as much as possible. You can even use an empty two-liter bottle with the bottom cut out, as long as your bird feeder is small enough. This will keep small animals off of your feeder, but still allow birds of all sizes to get their meal for the day.
Having a bird feeder in your backyard will keep beautiful birds visiting all year long, & you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing that you’re providing them with the food they need. You can watch them out your kitchen window or listen to their beautiful music while sitting in your yard. Birds are great to watch all year long, & will most likely brighten up your backyard. If you’re interested in watching beautiful birds visit your yard on a daily basis, you should consider adding a birdfeeder to your d?cor.
