Has any one ever heard of putting newspaper in your flower garden to prevent weeds?

Last year, my flower garden had so many weeds, I couldn’t stand it. I heard some where that if you put newspaper down first and then water it and then cover that with mulch, that the newspaper will prevent weeds from growing. Is that true? Is there a certain way you have to do it? Any input would be nice.
Have you ever grown heirloom tomatoes?

Why do you like them? How much do they differ in taste from “regular” tomatoes?
What species do you prefer? Please mention sweetness, time it takes to grow, size, what dishes it can be used in, etc. All details are appreciated!
I want to buy some heirloom tomato seeds for my mom for Mother’s Day; it will be totally unexpected and she loves tomatoes! Sadly, she’s only tried the hybrids at the grocery store and so have I.
Where can I get seeds from, other than online sources? Are they sold at greenhouses?

Has any ever naturalized flower bulbs?

I read something recently that seemed really awesome. You take flower bulbs and plant them randomly in your yard, then come spring you have bursts of color in your lawn. The article said that you would obviously need to choose flowers that do not get too tall and ones that will finish flowering by the time the grass needs mowed for the first time.
Has anyone done this before? Was it successful?
